Background of the Study

Workplace fatigue is a significant issue in healthcare settings, particularly for psychiatric nurses who often deal with high-stress situations, long working hours, and emotionally challenging patients. Fatigue can impair cognitive and physical functioning, reducing job performance and increasing the likelihood of errors (Fletcher et al., 2023). In psychiatric nursing, where critical thinking, emotional regulation, and patient care are central to job performance, the effects of fatigue are particularly pronounced.

Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, like many healthcare institutions, faces challenges related to nurse burnout and fatigue. Psychiatric nurses at the hospital often work long shifts in demanding conditions, which may contribute to high levels of fatigue and reduced job performance. Understanding how workplace fatigue affects job performance in psychiatric nurses is crucial for improving patient care, ensuring the well-being of healthcare workers, and optimizing the functioning of psychiatric units.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the known impact of workplace fatigue on job performance, the specific effects of fatigue on psychiatric nurses at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, have not been sufficiently studied. This research aims to explore how fatigue affects the performance of psychiatric nurses in the hospital, assessing its impact on job satisfaction, patient care, and nursing outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of workplace fatigue experienced by psychiatric nurses at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
  2. To examine the impact of workplace fatigue on the job performance of psychiatric nurses.
  3. To recommend strategies for reducing workplace fatigue and improving job performance among psychiatric nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of workplace fatigue experienced by psychiatric nurses at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki?
  2. How does workplace fatigue affect the job performance of psychiatric nurses?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce workplace fatigue and improve job performance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High levels of workplace fatigue are associated with reduced job performance among psychiatric nurses.
  2. Psychiatric nurses who experience workplace fatigue report lower job satisfaction and patient care quality.
  3. Interventions aimed at reducing workplace fatigue will improve job performance and job satisfaction among psychiatric nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on psychiatric nurses at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, assessing the relationship between fatigue and job performance. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported data and the generalizability of findings to other psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria.
